“The Girl in the Green Sweater” is a brilliant memoir. Told in simple yet engaging prose, this autobiographical tale of a Jewish family in Poland during the Holocaust who hide, along with others, in a sewer for over a year, captures reader interest from the get-go and never releases it until the final satisfying word.The author, in collaboration with a talented writer, relates her before- and after-sewer life as well. But of course the meat of the book occurs when she is 7 years old, ultimately into 8, and together with her esteemed father, nurturing mother, younger brother, uncle and several others with distinct personalities — despite the horror of setting up housekeeping in a sewer amid rats and filth, manage to do so with the help of a benevolent Catholic sewer worker, Socha, and his two colleagues. Though the agreement is that the trio will continually receive payment for protecting the band of Jews and delivering food and other essentials — even after the family’s money and valuables run out, and despite the risk in such an endeavor — Socha convinces the others to continue aiding the group. Indeed, in addition to truly liking the family, Socha views this rescuing as his chance for redemption for his earlier lawless life.Something is always happening in this story — sometimes tragic, sometimes humorous, sometimes thrilling, sometimes frightening, sometimes even a dash of romantic love.
